Assistant Chef
We are seeking a highly motivated individual dedicated to culinary excellence to join our restaurant team as a Chef Assistant. As part of our back-of-house team, you will arrive early each day to prep ingredients, sauces, dressings, and any special items. You will also work through high-volume meal shifts preparing dishes and assisting the head chef, as well as stay late cleaning and organizing the prep area and marking items to be reordered. This job requires prior kitchen experience, and our ideal candidate has formal culinary training in addition to excellent multitasking and organizational skills.
Chef Assistant Duties and Responsibilities
Prepare all ingredients for the daily menu, including chopping vegetables, thawing frozen items, preparing sauces, and setting out any special items
Prepare salads, side dishes, and appetizers during high-volume meal shifts
Assist the head chef as necessary
• Refer to the list of needed ingredients on a day-to-day basis and check inventory
• Acquire ingredients not available in storage prior to the start of the day
• Inform the kitchen staff of their schedules and delegate appropriate duties
• Monitor food budgets and make sure that all supplies are bought within the set budget
• Make arrangements to store food items in a safe and orderly manner
• Rotate frozen food items as standardized in the kitchen rule book
• Hand ingredients and utensils to head chef during food preparation activities
• Maintain kitchen order by ensuring the cleanliness of tables, counters, and work areas
• Oversee cleanliness and maintenance of kitchen equipment and utensils
• Operate kitchen equipment such as ovens and grills for cooking purposes
• Maintain knowledge of all recipes so that the head chef’s place can be filled effectively in case of absenteeism
• Set prepared dishes so that they look aesthetically pleasing
• Make certain that appropriate portions have been dished out
• Deal with customers’ complaints and/or suggestions
Chef Assistant Requirements and Qualifications
Professional experience in a fast-paced kitchen environment
Formal culinary training (strongly preferred but may be substituted for experience)
Excellent self-motivation and the ability to work unsupervised
Strong multitasking and organizational skills
In-depth understanding of food health and safety regulations
Excellent verbal communication skills
Exceptional physical stamina and strength
Ability to work as part of a team
Thoroughness and attention to detail
